Yesterday, my boss gave us a fun exercise, to research ways of data science project scoping. I knew immediately that I’d love the exercise since this is something that I have been grappling with since I started working on data science projects.

Machine learning models are being quickly adopted in various industry applications because of their outstanding performance compared to traditional models such as linear regression. However, the black-box nature of many machine learning models casts doubts on their usability in practice, especially in the healthcare field. As noted by Lipton (2017), “the doctor just won’t accept that!” When health or even life is at stake, it is hard to trust a black-box algorithm that does not provide sufficient explanations for its decisions.

This was one stop on our mid-west trip during Christmas break 2016. This was the biggest group trip I organized to date. There were 9 of us. We drove from Zion National Park to view the sunset. We arrived at the park late in the afternoon. After a short visit to the visitor’s center. We stopped by a few overlooks, and then began hiking at Sunset Point. The sunshine was just right, for which I was super grateful. The Bryce Amphitheater was covered with snow, which stood in contrast with the bright orange colors of the sand stones. It was an amazing hike down into the Amphitheater, surrounded by the hoodoos of various shapes. The most notable one is probably Thor’s Hammer. The sky showed this beautiful pink red and pink blue right after sunset, which added to the surreal scenery. Close to dawn, we gradually lost sight and had to turn back.

I visited W and we went to hike and take pictures at the UCR Botanic Gardens. It was a beautiful garden, well worth the visit. See below for some photos I took at the garden. See more photos at my instagram.

Fiery Gizzard Trail is the place that re-ignited my love for hiking. I didn’t hike much during graduate school and found this gem when looking for a group outing not long after graduation. We went there in a group of 6 and were “tortured” by the big boulders and sometimes misleading trail blazers. We turned back at the Raven’s Point and took the easy way back via the Dog Hole Trail. That was my first tough hike in years and I rejoiced throughout the hike, for both the feeling of sweat and the escape to nature. Because of how special this place is, I always wanted to go back and do a through-hike.

A great late Fall hike. The sunshine was just perfect. Lots of newly fallen leaves on the ground. I loved the crushing sound when stepping on the leaves. We also saw bisons and turkeys at the Elk & Bison Prairie. They were pretty chill ╰⋃╯
I mishear lyrics pretty frequently, which always amuse myself and folks around me. Then one day I thought, well, I might as well keep a log to amuse myself later and hopefully bring some laughter to more folks. Be aware! Bad jokes ahead!
I am generally not a fan of sharing my life all over the Internet, but thought it’d be good to keep a record of things that I thought worth sharing. Then one day when I look back, maybe I’ll surprise me.
Time series forecasting is an important technique that is widely used in business settings such as stock and sales. In this project, I’ll use a powerful tool, the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model, to forecast the Walmart sales data.
In this blog piece, I am going to discuss my learnings from the Leetcode algorithm questions using Python as the tool.
mlr is one of my favorite R machine learning packages. Here I wrote a walk-through of the package to help myself and hopefully be of some help to folks out there as well!
I created a shiny app so that we can explore the patterns in Medicare Part D drug prescription, with a focus on opioids. Fatal drug overdose pattern was also included.
I created a R Markdown report on the patterns in Medicare Part D drug prescription, with a focus on opioids. Fatal drug overdose pattern was also included.
I participated in the Zillow Kaggle project with Jason King and JoAnn Alvarez.
I analyzed this dataset on Kaggle to gain a bird’s eye view of bird strikes.
I participated in the 5th Annual Vanderbilt Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition and made it to the final round, during which I presented on my thesis work.
We developed and evaluated the Vanderbilt Bird Expertise Test using Item Response Theory, and modeled the mechanisms of individual differences in visual categorization.
We quantified holistic processing in faces with different configural information, used R and Matlab.
